dupobs make a new tradition on their new album
Song Eight – Suckle Cuckle
This song is for Hungarian citizenship ceremonies performed by a kabuki ensemble on the island of Corsica. To obtain Hungarian citizenship, there are instructions to follow. First, put whatever personal information you like (maybe your name) on the application form. Any scrap of paper will do. Next, have someone take a high-contrast black and white photo of the back of your head (it’s best if you are going bald), and staple it to the application form. (Say “Thank you, Innerspazz.â€) Next, spill some soup on it, and mail it to the Hungarian Government of Corsica at Kabuki-za (attn. Béla Tarr), PO Box 9, Moldova.

Zulu Records is a Vancouver record store that has long been a major force in Vancouver’s independent music scene. In February, Zulu added drop the coin to their “Local & Canadiana” listening booth, allowing customers a chance to sample dupobs’ brand of regressive noise. A sticker on the CD entreats customers to “LISTEN!”, and refers to the group as “Local pranksters”. Some are sure to be enticed. But who’s going to buy this crap?

Recently, dupobs did a media exchange with DeliciouSweets, one of Japan’s most intriguing musical groups. Through their “Coquette Showsâ€, DeliciouSweets mix music and drama to create a carnival-like atmosphere. The DVD we received depicts a performance that is alternately dark, innocent, surreal, and charming; inducing laughter one moment, and tears the next. DeliciouSweets are highly entertaining to say the least, and there’s something… else. Something deeper underlying their music and performance. What is it?
And what did DeliciouSweets think of the CD we sent them? Chaamar, the group’s leader, had this to say about our latest album, drop the coin:
[drop the coin] has a mysterious atmosphere, something I’ve never heard before, something unpleasant! It reaches both the ears and the body! I certainly understand wanting to destroy the notion that great things have to be beautiful, etc. Who’s to say one thing is beautiful and another is ugly? Listening to this album, I was able to imagine the performers’ sense of humour, and couldn’t help but laugh along! I wondered what it would look like live. Something festive, the band playing instruments with their feet! I’d really enjoy that!

dupobs’ latest album, drop the coin, is likely the worst you’ve heard in a while. Yet it’s not crap just for crap’s sake. Based on dupobs’ Regressive Manifesto, the group has created an album in which content and production values are perfectly matched. Whereas mainstream pop artists (Britney Spears, Finger Eleven, Radiohead, etc.) take constipating pains to polish the minute details of trite and valueless melodies, dupobs devote no effort whatsoever. Following the Regressive Manifesto, drop the coin was played as sloppily as possible, and recorded only in as much time as it took to write.
And while there is a strong ‘conceptual’ side to this work, the songs are not without sonic interest. On drop the coin, dupobs make use of non-traditional instruments and playing styles to create a sound that as sonically interesting as it is satirical. On drop the coin you will hear not just electric guitar, but also a single snare drum, an un-amplified electric bass guitar played by foot, hair dryer, toy frog, harmonica, randomly sequenced Poly 800 synthesizer, and ‘baby bat’ – a children’s toy baseball bat fitted with microphone.
Standout tracks include Absolut Shit Nights, Drop The Coin, Sawtooth Humples, and Red’s Cross-Clottery Win. Sawtooth Humples, based on the Yukon gold rush, conflates the nation-founding myth with rock n roll gender stereotypes. Red’s Cross-Clottery Win is the theme song for a fictitious Dutch game show in which contestants bet on the demise of hospital patients.
